New Sculpt from LaTurbo Avedon is an exhibition that opened in July 2013 at TRANSFER. Ahead of its time in many ways, the installation spanned the brick-and-mortar gallery space and a virtual environment (via Second Life). The works were priced and sold in bitcoin. A decade later, TRANSFER is restaging this exhibition in partnership with Onassis ONX, and discussing vital preventive conservation work in the open to demonstrate the care that is required to sustain experimental time-based media artwork.

The exhibition will culminate with the first convening of FORA, a consortium focused on conservation and  cultural infrastructure built on decentralized technology created in partnership with Gray Area. This livestreamed virtual convening provides a unique opportunity to actively participate in discussions on conservation and care, alongside esteemed experts in the field. The initiative convenes conservators, curators, engineers, appraisers, and collectors to engage in an open peer-review process to boost conservation and care methods for media art. FORA aims to address a range of challenges in the media art world, including loss prevention, knowledge dissemination, transparency in appraisal, and value exchange.

The central work, a virtual sculpture called Rainbow Six (2013), was installed in the physical gallery space using flat projections, while in Second Life, the sculpture appeared as a shimmering weightless object. Today, the exhibition is being restored in collaboration with students and researchers from NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Integrated Design and Media (IDM) program, using cutting edge virtual production techniques and technological advances to better align with Avedon’s artistic goals.
